bcIMC’s approach to responsible investing seeks to be consistent with our duties to clients, supportive in our dealings with companies,
and reasonable in the standards we apply.
It is important that bcIMC’s approach to responsible investing is aligned with our legal and fiduciary duties to our clients. The
Pension Benefits Standards Act specifies that BC pension plan investments must be made in the best financial interests of plan members
and plan beneficiaries, and this Act applies to a large portion of our clients. bcIMC’s fiduciary duty is to act honestly, in good
faith and in the best interests of our clients. Therefore, the primary aim of our corporate governance and environmental and social
responsibility activities is to improve the risk and return profile of our clients’ funds.
bcIMC encourages public companies to implement good governance and corporate responsibility practices through engagement.
Engagement, supported by our
Shareholder Engagement Guidelines 
, includes the following activities:
- Voting the proxies for the hundreds of companies our clients own around the world.
- Directly meeting and corresponding with management and directors.
- Exchanging information and pooling resources with like-minded investors (current coalition memberships are listed on the left.
- Lobbying government and regulatory bodies for reforms.
We also invest in clean, green private placement, mortgage and real estate opportunities when appropriate.

, a UN-led initiative to develop and promote best practice in the area of responsible investment by institutional investors. We voluntarily
commit to fulfilling the Principles, where consistent with our investment strategy and day-to-day operations. For example, this website
disclosure supports the principle to be transparent about our activities and progress with regard to responsible investing.
